Disassemble Instructions: IKEA MALM Bed Frame

Posted on 13 Aug 12:07 , 16 comments

Follow these six steps to take apart your IKEA MALM bed frame:

Step 1: Unscrew Crossbrace

First Remove the mattress, bedding and slats. Roll up the slats and secure them for moving.

Unscrew the crossbrace screws then remove crossbrace.

Leave the mounting plates on the headboard and footboard in place.

Step 2: Remove Mid-Beam

Pop the midbeam out of the mounting plates.

Step 3: Loosen Hex Bolts

Using the IKEA wrench tool loosen the hex bolts on each corner of the frame.

Step 4: Remove U-Shape Hardware

Loosen up and remove the U-shape hardware with your finger.

Step 5: Remove The Headboard

Carefully fist hammer the headboard from the side rail.

It's helpful having a friend to dis-assemble the bed with you at this point. Or find a step-stool/shoe box to hold up the side rail when the headboard is completely part from the bed sides.

Step 6: Remove The Footboard

Carefully fist hammer the footboard from the side rail.

Finished!

At this point you should have the following loose hardware:

- malm wrench
- U (half moon) shape hardware
- Hex Bolt
- crossbrace screws

One 8x screws are very tight and not moving at all. What to do

  • David on

Some beds have spindle shaped fasteners instead of the fasteners that take the u-shaped half circle. For these, rotate (using allen wrench) until the arrow is pointed toward the piece it’s attached to. ALSO for high frames, the side brace covers one fastener and has to be removed.

Thanks for the info! Made taking the bed apart painless. And if anyone else ever needs to know, you can take the bed apart without the malm wrench, but you’ll definitely need some type of pliers that will grip the bolt edges in order to loosen them.

Please invest in making videos for the instructions.

Instructions were very simple to understand.
Only downside was that I placed my metal Slat bar over the corner U hardware circles.
So had to unscrew and remove the Metal Slat bar from the 2 side boards.
Placed them at the spot lower so in the future I wont have this problem again.
    MALM High Bed Frame.
    Thank you.

Any idea how to do that with a BRUSALI bed frame? Those come with large circular bolts that trap the screws inside, having a hellish time trying to figure out how to unlock them.

I bought two 13mm wrenches because I no longer had the Ikea wrench. They were both too thick to get into the space to loosen the hex nuts on the Malm bed. So I went to Ikea and they gave me another wrench. This was not magic. After a lot of effort and only one nut loosened, I decided to remove the metal strip along the inside of each side, that makes the hex nuts so inaccessible. The skin on my fingers were saved.

A metric 13 milimeter wrench can be substituted for the malm wrench

  • Alexa on

i too would like to know if it can be disassembled without the wrench!
